HPE & Micro Focus Launch Enterprise OpenStack & Kubernetes CaaS on SUSE Linux

SUSE Linux announced the release of their Kubernetes "Container as a Service" (CaaS) platform based on SUSE MicroOS at the LinuxCon (Beijing) in June of 2017. The SUSE CaaS Platform combines with the SUSE OpenStack 7 distribution to provide complete cloud data center management solutions for enterprise corporations, government agencies, higher education, & non-profit groups. SUSE Linux is one of the oldest and most trusted enterprise Linux distributions with more than 25 years experience in open source development. Acquia Releases the Reservoir Distribution for Decoupled Drupal & OpenEDU for Online Learning

DrupalCon North America, the largest and most important annual convention for Drupal developers, took place this year in Baltimore (April 24-28, 2017) with Drupal founder and Acquia CTO Dries Buytaert delivering the keynote address. One of the new innovations in the Drupal platform that received a lot of attention at the convention was the advancement of various strategies for decoupling Drupal in order to separate the frontend and backend processes in a manner that allows for content to be streamed to multiple devices via APIs, overriding the standard theme-driven system of publication. Use of JSON API & OpenAPI, as implemented in the recent Reservoir distribution from Acquia for decoupled Drupal installs, can turn the Drupal CMS into a publishing engine that can be used with IoT devices, augmented reality applications, voice recognition systems like Alexa, fitness wearables, AI chatbots, and other next-generation software platforms that extend beyond the web browser. The 2017 DrupalCon featured 12 main session tracks with 175+ seminars & featured speakers, as well as a convention hall with thousands of IT company booths, all representing the vibrancy of Drupal's open source development community.

Deis Releases "Draft" for Microsoft Azure: Automating Kubernetes with Helm

Draft: A Command Line Utility for the Auto-Production & Orchestration of Docker Containers

In April of 2017, Microsoft acquired Deis, a small start-up company specializing in container services for data center management, in order to integrate the Workflow, Helm, and Steward utilities for Kubernetes into the Azure Cloud platform. Workflow is a continuous integration suite for DevOps teams that enables Agile/Scrum workstation collaboration through distributed network teams with Docker, Kubernetes, and custom web server stack extensions for common programming languages like PHP, Python, Java, ASP.NET, Perl, Go, & Ruby on Rails. Helm charts allow for the easy management of build snapshots for Docker and Kubernetes containers at scale over millions of server nodes in the cloud. Steward is part of the Kubernetes incubator for Service Catalog development with Red Hat, IBM, & the Microsoft Deis team working together on the project. This month Microsoft announced the availability of Draft on the Azure Container Service, a new command line utility that speeds up the deployment and orchestration of Docker containers in Kubernetes clusters through the auto-installation of required stack software. Kubernetes can also be used with Apache Mesos, Rancher, and Docker Swarm on the Azure Cloud Platform to compete with similar product offerings from AWS, Google Cloud, Rackspace, & IBM.
